It can be a challenge to find the right large format inkjet printer. The process of buying a printer is simple if you consider these five factors. Are you looking for an inkjet printer with a large size, but don't know where to begin? Do you want to upgrade your current printer? Do you need some advice on what to look for? Here are 5 things to keep in mind when buying a printer. 1. Image QualityDepending on your target market the requirements for image quality may vary based on your target market's requirements for image quality. There are a few things to consider: Resolution- Printers that can provide a minimum of 1200dpi resolution for printing would be suitable for fine photography and reproduction well. There are a variety of resolution options available on most printers, so make sure you find one that offers a variety of capabilities. Color Gamut- Certain newer printers have improved ink sets, which expand the printable gamut you can create. Sometimes, printer brochures or information kits contain gamut comparisons. Check the available downloads on the site of the manufacturer. Another way to assess the possible gamut of different printers is to download manufacturers' ICC profiles for the printer you're looking at. When you Soft-Proof an ICC profile on the screen, you'll be able to determine the colors that the printer is able to accurately reproduce, without shifting colors (shift will differ based on the intent of rendering). Density- Ink density refers to rich, deep and vibrant shades. Different inks can produce higher or lower densities and it is important to test printed samples. Utilize a densitometer for black-and-white photos and determine the delta of black ink density. This is usually a good indication of which ink will yield greater densities. 2. Size & SpeedThe image sizes that you want to print will determine the size of your printer. Are you currently using a 17'' wide printer and are not sure whether to buy a 24'' or upgrade to 44''? You don't have to answer this question. Ask your customers! This will allow you to determine the most well-known sizes. You can ask your customers what sizes they'd be interested in, if you could have more print capabilities. There are a variety of popular sizes on the internet and get an idea of what they are. 3. News ManagingTake a list of all the media you use to print. Now add the media you would like to start using to the list. Modern printers are equipped for third-party media, so choose the printer that is able to handle anything you throw at it! Certain printers are more for photography, while others are able to handle graphics for short-term use and outdoor signage. Are you aware of other printmakers in your target market are using? 4. Easy of UseSometimes, we get involved in features and specifications that we overlook the necessity of usability. A printer that is simple to use will mean less stress and troubleshooting. Production can go smoothly if there are fewer settings and guesswork involved. These questions will allow you to decide how easy it is to operate the printer. Is it simple to load and unload media? Is the printer's control panel simple to navigate and understand? Is the printer driver simple to set up and use? How simple is it to make custom ICC profiles as well as media settings? What level of control does the printer allow the user to exercise? Does it have enough ease to teach others how to use it. Can you save custom settings and details for printing jobs to come? Are you sure it's feasible to click "Print" and then leave? 5. SupportThe most often overlooked element when buying a printer is the support for the product. It's frustrating to see a product fail to work properly. Before you purchase a printer determine what is compatible with it: Is phone/email support included? Does the technical support team able to respond quickly? Are you able to reach an experienced or knowledgeable user? Can I get 3rd-party ICC profiles? Are parts end-user replaceable? Are parts that are not easily changed by the end-user easily replacement-able? Are there instructional videos and other videos? If there are known issues, are there working solutions or workarounds? How long will it take before my printer goes out completely?
